It’s a mistake of Driveclub VR to simulate any head movement. It’s subtle, and I didn’t exactly lose my lunch over it, but there’s something definitely off about it. It’s all well and good being able to turn and see the meticulously-modelled monster V12 mounted behind your seat, but 98% of the time in a racing game you need have your eyes set on the road in front, as far ahead as feasible, and that happens to be where Driveclub VR is at its ugliest.ĭon't be fooled by these screenshots they're not representative of PSVR.I also found myself completely rejecting the artificial, forced perspective shifts – these keep your view tilted forwards for just a moment anytime the road begins to rise (or flatten after a descent) and the car’s nose pitches up (the effect is reversed when you suddenly dip downhill). This hardware disparity is completely expected, I know, but it remains exhausting squinting at coloured blobs. I can play sessions of Project CARS in VR on PC that last hours, but I can’t tolerate Driveclub VR for anywhere near the same amount of time. Anything beyond 40-or-so metres ahead of you begins to turn into a low-res globule, which makes it a massive strain to concentrate on upcoming corners, or even look through apexes. At its worst, however, it’s an absolute eyesore. I do really feel seated in a virtual car (a slightly blurry but very authentic virtual car). The way the beating sun even picks up the scuffs on the windscreen from the wipers is a particularly nice touch that’s survived the transition. The way different surfaces absorb and reflect light, from matte-finished dashboards to the glint of polished carbon fibre. There’s an overall softness to the image, like you’re wearing someone else’s glasses and everything’s a fraction out of focus, but the detail achieved in the cabins here is still immense. At its best, Driveclub VR looks far, far better than I’d ever anticipated. If you're a huge baby and now want to quit PC gaming forever, check out the best Xbox games of 2012 instead.“The biggest problem, however, is visual fidelity. If you're looking for more, and you're a member of the PC crowd, you'll be happy to know that the PC has many of the 100 best games of all time. It's not quite as bad as playing Duke Nukem Forever, but it's not exactly Portal. The Metro interface is cool for tablets, but the integration with the traditional Windows desktop is so half-baked it verges on insulting. If it didn't have the great desktop OS underneath the weird new interface, we'd be scathing. It's just hard to get excited about such a modest step up. It's a souped-up version of Windows 7 with a weird interface slapped overtop of the regular desktop. That sounds like faint praise, and it is, but really, Windows 8 is a great operating system. Those of us who have upgraded are not displeased. If you're on 7, you don't gain much apart from DirectX11.1 (which won't be coming to earlier versions of Windows) and a slightly faster computer-but upgrading isn't a bad move. The cheap upgrades expire January 31st, 2013. If you're coming from XP, the jump from DirectX 9 to DirectX 11 alone is worth the price. If your poor PC is still running Windows XP or Vista, do it a favor and update to a faster, more secure, more modern OS. That's the cheapest Windows upgrade ever. $40 gets you an upgrade from XP, Vista, or 7. Microsoft really wants you to do this, so they've priced 8 to move. If you're running Windows XP or Vista, though, Windows 8 is a huge step up and you should probably upgrade. But the differences between 7 and 8 aren't large enough or meaningful enough that gamers should feel compelled to plop down good money for an update. Windows 8 runs slightly faster than Windows 7 on the same hardware, it boots up faster, and there are nice tweaks to Windows Explorer, file copying, and a few other aspects of the desktop. The new interface is clearly intended for small touchscreens, not high-res monitors. It's not really necessary if you have 7, but it's super necessary if you don'tĪs a gamer, you don't need to be in a hurry to upgrade to Windows 8 if you're already running Windows 7.
